SFA launches probe after Ibrox pitch invasion – Daily Business

Mayhem: Ibrox

The Scottish FA has launched an investigation after Rangers and Celtic fans clashed on the Ibrox pitch following the Hoops’ Scottish Cup quarter-final victory on penalties.

The ugly scenes on a sunkissed afternoon in Glasgow cast a dark cloud over Scottish football and will no doubt bring serious repercussions.

There were 7500 Celtic fans in the away end for the first time in eight years, the Broomloan Stand erupting with joy as Tomas Cvancara’s decisive spot-kick hit the back of the net after 120 minutes of goalless action.

The supporters spilled over the advertising boards in their exuberance, with Rangers fans rushing to confront them from the opposite end of the ground.

Stewards and police seemed initially unable to prevent the invasion, with the unacceptable scenes bringing back memories of the mayhem which followed the 1980 Scottish Cup Final between the bitter rivals.

Order was eventually restored but not before reports emerged of a member of the Celtic coaching staff having being assaulted.

In the immediate aftermath of the shocking scenes, the SFA said a high-level probe was already under way.

“The Scottish FA condemns the behaviour from supporters entering the field of play following today’s Scottish Gas Scottish Cup Quarter-Final at Ibrox Stadium,” a statement said.

“An investigation will be carried out immediately in line with the Judicial Panel Protocol.”
