Revealed: Britain’s most Instagrammable shopping centre

2 min read

Manchester’s Trafford Centre racks up 156,000 hashtags, nearly triple Westfield London, as Northern shopping centres dominate the UK’s shopping selfie scene.

A new study from Lottomart analysing Instagram hashtag data from the UK’s biggest shopping centres has revealed that the Trafford Centre is officially Britain’s most Instagrammable mall, racking up a staggering 156,000 hashtag mentions in posts.

That’s three times more than Westfield London, the country’s largest shopping centre by size (235,900 m2), which trails behind with just 52,000 mentions.

And it’s not just Manchester flying the flag.

The research by the lifestyle team at Lottomart shows that the North dominates Britain’s shopping selfie culture, with Liverpool One (110,000) and Meadowhall (95,900) also securing podium positions.

The Top 10 Most Instagrammable Shopping Centres in the UK

Trafford Centre (Manchester) – 156,000
Liverpool One (Liverpool) – 110,000
Meadowhall (Sheffield) – 95,900
Manchester Arndale (Manchester) – 53,400
Westfield London (London) – 52,000
Metrocentre (Gateshead) – 51,100
Bullring Estate (Birmingham) – 35,400
Merry Hill (Dudley) – 34,600
Cabot Circus (Bristol) – 33,200
Westfield Stratford City (London) – 31,800

London Lags Behind

Despite being home to some of the UK’s largest retail spaces, London failed to dominate the rankings.

While Westfield London just sneaked in the top five, other capital-based centres such as Westfield Stratford City (31,800 posts) and Brent Cross (800 posts) fell significantly behind their Northern rivals.

Even though Westfield London spans more than 235,000 square metres, it generates only a third of the Instagram buzz of the Trafford Centre – suggesting size alone doesn’t translate into social media appeal.

The findings reflect how shopping centres have evolved into “experience destinations”, with architecture, décor and photogenic features driving posts as much as purchases.

Centres with grand staircases, domed ceilings, rooftop terraces and statement façades appear to perform strongest online.

Manchester alone claims two spots in the top four, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a retail and lifestyle hotspot.

The Least Instagrammed Centres

At the other end of the scale, several major centres recorded fewer than 1,000 hashtags.

Among the lowest were:

Whitgift Centre (Croydon) – 350
The Merrion Centre (Leeds) – 400
Westquay (Southampton) – 700

The dramatic contrast highlights a growing divide between retail spaces that double as social media hotspots and those that remain purely functional shopping destinations.

With millions of Brits documenting their days out online, shopping centres are increasingly competing not just on stores and restaurants, but also on aesthetic appeal.

From marble interiors to glittering seasonal displays and panoramic rooftop bars, the modern shopping centre is as much about the photo opportunity as it is the purchases.
